Day 1: We’ll read Eve Bunting’s Sunflower House as we begin learning more about seeds and flowers. We’ll also make our very own seed tapes that we’ll plant in the children’s garden. Since you can’t plant seeds without giving them water, we’ll make our very own water bottles! We’ll also work on our Garden Journal and Keepsake Flowerpots.
Day 2: Jack’s Garden by Henry Cole is the perfect book to help us learn more about diversity among plants and insects! We’ll learn about “friend and foe” insects in the garden and make our own Ladybug and Bee Buddies. We’ll also talk about composting and begin making Worm Boxes. Of course, a day in the garden wouldn’t be complete without playing in the dirt! What could be more fun than planting a Pizza Patch Garden?!
Day 3: We’ll continue learning about how composting makes soil and helps the earth by reading Compost Stew and visiting the farm’s compost pile. We’ll also learn how to make our own potting soil and use it as we add a plant to the Keepsake Flowerpot we made on Day 1. We’ll also use it to plant garlic bulbs that we can take home to watch sprout. Working on our Garden Journals and enjoying a Nature Scavenger Hunt will round out our day.
Day 4: Learning about how gardening can bring people together and how to be good stewards of the land will be our focus. We’ll read two books today – The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin and The Tree Farmer by Chuck Leavell. Making Plant Pals using recycled materials will be one of our hands-on activities. We’ll also play Veggie Concentration, decorate wooden coasters to use at home, and complete our Garden Journals.
